To add oil, unscrew and remove the engine oil fill cap on top of the valve cover. Pour in the oil, and install the engine oil fill cap. Tighten it securely. Wait a few minutes and recheck the oil level. Do not fill above the upper mark; you could damage the engine.

Oil is a major contributor to your engine’s performance and longevity. Always use a premium-grade detergent oil. You can determine an oil’s SAE viscosity and Service Classification from the API Service label on the oil container. A fuel-efficient oil is recommended for your Honda. This is shown on the API Service label by the words “Energy Conserving.” This oil is formulated to help your engine use less fuel.

The API Service label also tells you the service classification of the oil. Always use an oil that is labeled “API Service SJ.” This service rating may include other  lassifications, such as CD. These additional classifications are not a problem, as long as the label also carries the SJ classification.

  1. Hello
Am writing from Nigeria in West Africa. I couldn’t get the original recommended SAE W30 easily here and where to get is very expensive. Is there an alternative I can use for my Honda crv 98 car with about 250k mileage. Can I use SAE 5W 50 or Ow 20.

    Best regards

  2. Hello. My car is honda crv rd1, 2001, 2.0l, automatic gearbox, b20z1, gasoline, 200k km, buy in german, but first letter from VIN is “J”. And i’m not sure what oil i need to use, espesially api. I’m from russia so we have hot summers (+35-40) and cold winters (-30). And i also dont drive for long distances. What can you suggest?

    1. привет Alex, if your engine code it is B 20 Z1 this means the power of your car is 108 kw or 147 hp. For your motor you can use 5w-30 .
